Mother's Blessing

A Mother’s Blessing is inspired by many ancient cultures, specifically the Navajo culture, who held ceremonies known as “Blessingway’s”. A Blessingway was a gathering held for a woman that just started her period, going through menopause, just got engaged, or about to give birth. A tribe would gather for the woman of focus and bring to her: guidance, love, and support for the next major chapter in her life. A Blessingway was specific to these events because they were looked at as moments where a positive outcome was hoped for. They considered these events a “rite of passage”. To ensure that the woman of focus was receiving the guidance, love, and support needed, they would pray over her and her future, sing songs that were a direct reflection of their spiritual beliefs, dance to welcome protection from their ancestors. The tribe completely pampered the woman with massage, braiding her hair, soaking her feet, and many other things. Oftentimes these ceremonies would consist of different women, particularly ones who had already had their period, been engaged, gone through menopause and/or had given birth (it would vary based on what they were coming together to celebrate). The intent behind the guest of the ceremony was that they could share stories and give advice based on what they knew from their own journey. Sometimes these ceremonies could last for up to 9 days! They were very intentional with what they did, how they did it, and what they were doing it for. Though we only know a few of the actual practices they did, we know one thing is for certain, they absolutely believed in celebrating and caring for the woman of focus physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

As time went on, everything became more Westernized and modern, so these types of ceremonies became extremely far, few, and in between. No one celebrated the beginning and end of a menstrual cycle, nor were guidance circles for engagements and pregnancies considered a necessity. Over time, the focus of  pregnancy-labor-delivery became the child. Baby Showers became popular when people came over after birth. People would come to see the baby, there was nothing to cater to or support mom. Because this has become a normality, generation after generation, no one considers how important it is to take care of mom during this time in her life. Mothers often talk about how they felt extremely lonely, unheard, uncared for, and uninformed in regards to pregnancy-labor-delivery. Endless Blessings will end that cycle by bringing forth “A Mother’s Blessing”, a ceremony to bring support, love, and care to the mother-to-be.

This ceremony will be designed to work at the wants and needs of the mother to be, and will be customized for each mother, although the intent will always be the same.
